It seems as though they are a popular topic of conversation in the ice dancing folder.I'm looking forward to discussing their latest routine STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS which should be broadcast next Friday on the World Pro Competition on NBC, 8 p.m. EST! Set those VCRs!But why wait, let's start now! Who saw this routine at Landover? What did you think?Margo Von T.Subj: Re:New folderDate: 1/17/96 9:21:11 AMFrom: PamGotcher Posted on: America OnlineYea!!! A T&D folder! Thanks Kimber, we needed that! Also, just wanted to let people know that I found a T&D book actually published in the US by Blackbirch Press. (Woodbridge, CT) It's part of their Partners series for "juveniles" - 112 pages including glossary, chronology, etc. But I would say it's written for the older juvenile. (I enjoyed it!) I tried to order from my local BDaltons and they were unable - finally got it by calling Blackbirch on their 800 number. They do take credit cards. PamSubj: Re:new folderDate: 1/17/96 9:56:20 AMFrom: BevAFresh3 Posted on: America OnlineSo happy to have this folder!! So many have helped me find information on T&D and their books and tapes!!! This is wonderful....since I'm really not a skating fan as such, but enjoy T&D and always anxious to know any thing about them....I often might miss their appearances on TV because I'm not familar with the names of the shows (What I'm trying to say....if it doesn't come right out and say T&D..I might miss it). So thanks so much for the information on the up coming show. Any others I should be watching for? Thanks again....BevSubj: Re:New folderDate: 1/17/96 5:06:28 PMFrom: Sesti Posted on: America OnlineI saw "Still Crazy..." at Landover, and loved it! My memory isn't all that good, but in my notes, I have comments on the unique spins (as I remember, one looked almost like a pairs spin) and a move that looked strangely like Underhill & Martini's "leap of faith". It was very innovative... I have been a huge fan since I was 10 and saw Mack and Mabel. I don't think enough can ever be said about these two. At Landover T&D skated "Still Crazy After All These Years" and "Cecilia". At Challenge of Champions they did "Bridge" and "Cecilia". Of course I could watch "Cecilia" a tousand times and never get tired of it. Hang on, I have seen it a thousand times! Thank God for VCRs. I had to do this twice, once in Charlotte, NC, where I did the "Path to Perfection" "Fire on Ice" 2-tape cassette, and then once here in Niceville, FL, where I did the Tour tape. The larger the town/city the more affordable the process is, I found, however it's best to call around. It cost me $28 in Charlotte and almost $50 here. Good luck!PamSubj: Re: Reformatting T&D tapesDate: 1/22/96 2:56:19 PMFrom: MargoVonT Posted on: America OnlineHello everyone,It's so great to read the notes and find everyone excited about a T&D folder! Me too! As per a few requests, here's a list of some of the T&D things available commercially and where:The "Face The Music" Tour Tape is available in England and Canada. Canada is the NTSC format. The number I have is for A&B Sound in Vancouver and it's 1-800-663-0596. The tapes are on backorder, but perhaps if enough people call they will get moving on it! This tape is supposed to be released in the U.S. but no word on when. The T&D autobiography is available in England and Canada. Bookstores will ship. I ordered mine from Dillon's in London at 011-44-171-636-1577 and received it in about a week. You can also order the two other T&D books through Dillon's "Fire on Ice" -- a "coffee table" book with wonderful photos and the Christopher Hilton biography that was released in '94 (also has lots of great photos).0002000007B200001B8E 7AC,The T&D "Face the Music" CD, which has music from their routines from '82 through '94 (Summertime through Face the Music) is only available in England. I ordered mine from Tower Records in London at 011-44-171-439-2500 and received it in about 2 weeks.Don't forget when ordering from England that the exchange rate is about $1.50 per pound -- so 10 pounds would be about $15. Also, shipping is pricey, running from about 5 pounds for a CD to about 7-8 pounds for books. But I have found it very pleasant ordering from England and that I get things quickly and in good shape.Other T&D tapes available in the U.S. are "Path To Perfection", "T&D and the Russian All Stars", and "Sun Valley Seminar" All of these are available through Rainbo in Chicago. (Sorry, I don't have a number at the moment) You can also order "Path" and "All Stars" from Suncoast Video. I've also found "All Stars" on the shelf at Suncoast, Tower Video, Best Buys, and Borders Books.T&D routines are also found on "Magic Memories on Ice I" (Olympic "Bolero"); "Magic Memories II" ('84 Olympic Exhibition "I Won't Send Roses"); "Great Routines of the '80's" ("Venus" and "Valentino Tango" from the '85 World Pro Competition -- beware, the voice over on this is terrible, but the routines are worth seeing, especially the comic tango); and 1994 Olympics Ice skating tapes. The competition tape has both the rhumba OD and "Face the Music" and the double tape set includes the '94 exhibition "Bolero". I have found all of these tapes at Suncoast Video and they are most likely available through Rainbo.Hope this helps everyone add to their collection. Speaking of which, don't forget to set your VCR's for 1995 World Professional Competition this weekend -- Friday at 8 p.m. (EST) NBC for "technical " (T&D's "Still Crazy") and Saturday 8 p.m. (EST) NBC for artistic (T&D "Cecelia"). They take all major credit cards.By the way - exchange rate as of last week in December was actually $1.59 per pound. With credit cards it goes on at that day's exchange rate, and there is no surcharge. I had to send a bank draft in pounds sterling once for something else and the bank charged me $25 for a $22 bank draft. YIKES. Best to do it in credit cards if possible. PamSubj: Still CrazyDate: 1/27/96 2:33:45 AMFrom: MargoVonT Posted on: America OnlineSo did everyone watch Torvill & Dean's performance on the Landover broadcast tonight? Pretty fabulous, don't you think?I have to say STILL CRAZY was even better than I remembered. The emotion, the flow, the moves, the spins, the holds, the looks. A really gorgeous routine. I think the mood and choreography illustrate that they've been skating together a long time and they are still crazy about skating and crazy about each other. The routine feels sweet and melancholy at the same time. I love the outside airplane spin, Chris's sommersault and coming up on pointe and Jayne holding him, the move where Jayne jumps backwards into Chris's waiting arms. Ah heck, I love the whole thing.<G> 0002000007B800002C68 7B2,'Cuse me, gotta go rewind my tape....Margo Von T.Subj: Re:where to findDate: 1/27/96 8:47:01 PMFrom: Casri Posted on: America OnlineYou might want to try Four Shire Books, 17 High St, Moreton in Marsh, GL OAF, Great Britain. They are a book search service and found the Fire On Ice book for me; can't comment on it yet as Iordered it. It looked so much better at the Team Champs. I was sorry to see Chris stumble a bit. But everyone has to trip up once in awhile. And they won anyway! Now, I can't wait to see their part of Challenge of Champions. We should still see BRIDGE again on ABC when they air the ice dance portion of the Challenge of Champions from London. I do hope we don't have to wait until ''96 Landover for a new routine or 1997 when the Yo-Yo Ma/Bach Cello Suites that T&D are doing are filmed. BTW, Chris Dean is also supposed to be choreographing a dance for the spring season of the England National Ballet. What I wouldn't give to see his choreography on dancers on "dry land." And I also heard he choreographed the competition routines for the Lithuanian ice dance couple that Betty Callaway is coaching. They came in sixth in the recent European championships. I'm hoping their routines are shown when ESPN airs the Europeans or during Worlds. I love seeing what Chris choreographs for other ice dancers.Margo Von T.Subj: Re:Still CrazyDate: 1/29/96 1:55:49 AMFrom: MargeR1 Posted on: America OnlineDoes anyone know of any Canadian bookstores that would be a good source for the Torvill and Dean "Facing the Music" book? Definitely would suggest Face the Music, the Autobiography.Already read the Hennessey book. Is Face The Music really an autobiography book?Yes, it really is autobiographical! Does either one contain any real surprises or any new dirt? The autobiography is the words of Jayne and Chris - and they talk about many many things. - Some of it is hilarious, much of it has their dry British humor. They come across as very self-disclosing. Problems with tours, their naievete (pardon the spelling) when they started professional life, Chris's near death (twice!) - but it's a very upbeat.Torvill & Dean, the full story, is still someone writing about them and the focus seems to be more on competitions, etc.Also.. Is there a Torvil & Dean fanclub that I can write too or become a member? There's not an official one that Jayne and Chris have sanctioned. Is there a way to get a video tape of the 1984 Ottowa World Championship Bolero performance? That I haven't heard of. What does NTSC format mean - does it have to be reformatted? NTSC is the format that is used in the US and Canada. It does not have to be reformatted. LesleySubj: Re:T & D VideoDate: 2/10/96 8:58:20 PMFrom: PamGotcher Posted on: America OnlineThe T&D Video we are discussing is of a performance of their "Face the Music, the Farewell Tour." They are "solo" in seven numbers, but there are other numbers which involve the company members, both as solo and group numbers... The tape is beautiful, and I particularly love the Carmina Burana (8 numbers in all from Carmina Burana) even if Jayne and Chris are featured in only 1 of the 8 numbers, plus the 2 full company numbers. The monks seem to literally float on the ice. The lighting is unbelieveable. Hey, guys, this is the FAREWELL TOUR tape. I'm really glad I have it. It opens with some B&W backstage and rehearsal footage and closes with the same. "Carmina Burana" is gorgeous -- you do get the impression -- just as you did in person -- that the monks are floating! The tape also features the group numbers "Symphonetia" and "Let's Face the Music" which is a jazzy version of the song and the men in the group do some wonderful moves around, under and over a white grand piano in center ice! Other don't miss performances on the tape are Scott Williams doing a HOT solo to "Kiss" (sung by Tom Jones) and McDonald & Smith doing a sultry dance number. Catarina Lindgren is also featured and she's like a ballerina in skates. T&D numbers include "Bolero", "Barnum/Paso/Mack & Mabel" medley, "History of Love" (rhumba), "Encounter", "In Trutina" (in Carmina Burana segment), "HatTrick" and they close with "Let's Face the Music and Dance". 0002000008330000636B 82D,I'm sorry to say the "Strictly Skating" and Beatles segments are not on the tape. I really like this couple, and think they have great potential, they are very smooth and musical and athletic -- though I have to agree with the comments the other commentators have made (i.e., Barb Underhill during the Canadian Nationals) that they need better and more difficult choreography. Was it me, did anyone else have trouble hearing Chris and Jayne's comments above the music? I had to smile at the opinions offered for G&P's routines. Chris nailed them on a prolonged separation in their (short?) program. I guess the Olympics weren't that long ago...<g> All things considered, they were very generous in their comments.JoeAnnKSubj: Re:T&D commentatorsDate: 2/25/96 9:39:09 PMFrom: Skatfan Posted on: America OnlineAs a non-skater, I really appreciated knowledgable commentary on ice dancing, which is much more difficult for the uninitiated to appreciate technically. The comments on "dancing through" vs "dancing with" helped me a lot. I was also amused about the comments on illegal moves, but I have to agree that I really like the #2 couple (Russian) so much more than G and P, especially in the original dance.Subj: Re:T&D commentators0002000007C100007BB1 7BB,Date: 2/26/96 12:32:50 AMFrom: MargoVonT Posted on: America OnlineHi everyone,Ditto on everything everyone has said so far. I have to admit I was chuckling at the "illegal moves" comments on G&P and really laughed when Chris and Jayne said, in unision as G&P got ready for another fast part of their free "here they go again." LOL! I thought they were very even-handed, but they did say they thought they skated too much side by side and were not "entwined" enough and should be doing more difficult choreography.I also enjoyed their comments on K&O and agree their paso was excellent. They did present pretty pictures as Chris said and has a great presentation attitude. I don't personally like their choreography for their free, but they do skate it well. I'd vote for them over G&P in a minute. I think they could be real up-and-comers in ice dance and I like that they have a light style, not all that drama you often see in the Russian couples, IMHO.I liked the B&K comments too -- they DO need better and more difficult choreography. I also liked that Chris said he enjoyed watching them skate, that they really seemed to like the ice and the audience enjoyed them. I had to crack up at him calling their signature move "the hydroplaining thing" -- hmm, wonder if Chris put on a pair of skates so they could show him how they do that<G> So, do you think B&K chatted Chris up about choreographing for them (yeah, I know, in my dreams<G>0I really did learn a lot about what to look for in ice dancing with their learned commentary. Oh sure, they stumbled a few times and needed to vary their inflections but hey, they knew what they were talking about. And Fox needs to get a sound man who knows how to do a good mix and lower the music and up the microphones. I had to listen very carefully to hear all that T&D said.It was fun -- if I can't watch T&D skate, I'm happy to hear them teach me about it!Margo Von T.Subj: Next appearance?0002000007F40000836C 7EE,Date: 2/27/96 3:46:41 PMFrom: JoeAnnK Posted on: America OnlineDoes anyone know when we'll be seeing T&D again this season? Pop in and visit! As for T&D commentating, I didn't think they were critical, so much as they were factual. They pointed out illegalities, they pointed out things that were good as well as not so good, they also pointed out things that those of us who don't skate wouldn't notice. And Chris is a very experienced choreographer and I thought he was right on in his comments on choreography difficulty, style, skating through instead of with the music, and phrasing. IMHO, I think people were looking for them to be "nasty" about G&P. I think they were very even-handed and postive but pointed out things many of us have been thinking for a long time -- all speed no substance -- but they said it very nicely. Also, the British tend to be much more low-key -- or as one friend put it more "droll" than Americans, hence the laid-back style. I do think they need to punch it up a bit and get more expression in their voice, but that just takes a bit of experience -- as well as a TV network that has a sound person that knows to make the commentators mics louder than the dance music!<G>Margo Von T.Subj: Re:WebPageDate: 3/4/96 8:05:09 PMFrom: PamGotcher Posted on: America OnlineFrom: Dance Edge Pam, how do T&D feel about this?Dance Edge, I'm still awaiting a response from them. That meant that we got to see Chris Dean's new paso for Roca & Sur and for the Lithuanians(I simply can't remember their names<G>), one right after the other, and both very different. One of Chris's great qualities as a choreographer is the ability to bring out the strengths of whatever dance team or skater he's working with. I think he did this beautifully with Roca and Sur -- it was a great paso, very difficult. I thought they performed it very well having only learned it a week ago! IMHO, Gorsha is the better dancer and Renee is stiff and not very graceful -- these are perfect qualities for the paso. Renee's straight and stiff movements were used to full advantage and I think it's the best I've ever seen her look. R&S had great edges and close footwork. And they were marked WAY too low. I really hate that in dance you can't move up with a good performance, you are where you're placed and marked with those kind of marks. What a rip-off. Gorsha looked rather disgusted with the marks, I must say. It must feel so frustrating that no matter how good you skate, it's just tough, you'll get those 14th place marks. They did not deserve 4.8's. The Lithuanians were cute, very different style, lots of arms and speedy moves. I didn't like this OD as much, it didn't have that attitude you usually get from the paso doble. I have to watch the choreography a few more times to comment on it specifically, I was kind of distracted by watching the skaters style, as I'd never seen this couple before.0002000007B00000C451 7AA,Well, there' s my Dean OD review --- comments from all of you please! Chris didn't actually choreograph Drobiazko and Vanagas' OD and free - he only provided assistance - per their PA, Debbie Turner. For those of you who don't know (and I thought everyone did, or I would have been clearer...) Ice dancing for competition consists of 3 parts.First is the compulsory dances which are determined in advance and everyone dances the same dances, same steps - called the compusories. These dances change from year to year. We rarely see these on TV. Maybe occasionally at an Olympics.Second, what is now the Original Dance (OD) was once the Original Set Pattern (OSP) dance, which is done to a particular rythym (excuse my spelling, that doesn't look right :^) such as a tango or a paso doble - and here the dancers choose their own steps. Everyone dances to the same rythym, but their own steps and choice of music (so in one way you could still consider it compulsory, since the music rythym is compulsory). In the OSP, three sequences of the steps had to be skated, which is what you will notice with T&D's Paso Doble, or their Summertime performance. Finally, is the free dance. Four minutes, skaters are free to choose their own music, own dance. That's about the only *freedom*, however, because there are tons of rules they have to abide by - which has led to much controversy over the years.Any ice dancers online who want to correct me, jump in. It's teriffic, there was nothing at this year's World's paso dobles to compare -- well maybe a little of Roca & Sur's that Chris Dean choreographed<G> Rainbo carries it, as Pam said (call the 1-800 directory assistance and asked for the number or check out the T&D web page.) I ordered my copy 2 years ago through Suncoast Video. Go to your local video store and look through the big catalog they have under Sports and Torvill & Dean. I also rented it a a video store before I bought it, so you might check around. There are two amazing "neck holds" that Chris does in two OSPs. One is in the paso doble where Jayne is laying back, one skate on the ice, to Chris's right. Chris in a low arabesque, holding Jayne by the neck with his right hand and then he pretty much flips her around into a deep lunge position and up. I still don't know how they do it, it just looks impossible. (This is in the Artistry program.)0002000008F50000E387 8EF,But the one I think you heard about is in their '83 OSP which was a rock & roll. (Same year their free was "Barnum") At the very beginning of the pattern, Jayne falls backwards, one skate only on the ice, the other leg straight forward, and Chris catches her by the neck about 12 inches off the ice with his right hand, the other hand on his hip like "no big deal". It's very fast and Jayne looks like she doesn't have a care in the world when she falls back -- talk about trust! Hope this answers your questions.Margo Von T. I just got a transcript of a TV interview T&D did at the Nations Cup in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on Nov. 24, 1995. The last question the interviewer, David Weiss (who felt very comfortable asking this since has known T&D since he was very young when they worked in Obersdorf) asked was:DW: Jayne there was spectulation before Lillehammer that you and your husband wanted to start a family (Jayne looks at him in disbelief<G>) Now that you're both happily married, do either of you have plans to start a family and when can we see a Baby-Chris and Jayne on the ice. (All three laugh, Chris looks a little embarassed, Jayne surprised<G>)Jayne: No, we don't at the moment. You know maybe in a few years' time but at the moment, we're still quite happy. We (she and Phil) have a dog, that's enough for the time being!Chris: Well, hopefully, in the not too distant future. We (he and Jill) plan a family sometimes. I think there's something that you can gain from a family and it's something that will happen eventually, I hope. Path to Perfection has their '84 Europeans performances of Bolero and the Paso Doble (Capriccio Espagnol), which happened just before the Olympics. Since they performed those two dances the entire 83/84 season from British nationals, to Europeans, to Olympics, to Worlds, I tend to think of one performance as being synonomous with the other - and of course, they aren't. My mistake - I thought you were asking more to see the dances than the actual competition, specifically in Sarajevo - and I should have realized it was the specific competition since Bolero has been done so many times!<G>00020000074C0000F5A2 746,PamSubj: Re:'84 OlympicsDate: 4/3/96 11:05:29 PMFrom: MamariaP Posted on: America OnlineThanks for the info, Pam. <g> This may be a strange question, but exactly how many dances did they do at the '84 Olympics? It allowed for a choice between two of the four statutory groups. The four groups werea. Viennese waltz, Yankee polka, bluesb. Westminister waltz, paso doble, rumbac. Starlight waltz, kilian, tango romanticad. Rabensburger waltz, quickstep, Argentine tango."Previously one group was prescribed a year in advance, for the whole season. It was decided that during the 1983-4 season the choice, to be made on the eve of a championship,, would be between groups b and c." The Olympics featured group b. They got three 6.0s in the Westminister Waltz.00020000087D0000FCE8 877,And in answer to your other question, no, today they have changed the other "compulsory" dance from the Original Set Pattern dance (OSP) to just the Original Dance. I do not think they have to repeat the same steps (pattern) three times. They do have to dance to a specific rythym - as in this year it was the Paso Doble. Though you might like the lastest word on Chris Dean's venture into ballet choreography. One of the British papers (sorry, I don't know which as yet) had an article a few Sunday's back that showed a photo with Chris and the two lead dancers in his ballet. The article said the ballet would be a 25 minute piece, as yet untitled, in a contemporary classical vein set to six Paul Simon songs. The songs are: Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Sounds of Silence, Slip Slidin' Away, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Mother and Child Reunion and Still Crazy After All These Years. In the article, Chris says "It deals with relationships of softs I've been involved in." This goes along with previous comments that it would be semi-autobiographical.So, who wants to book a flight to England next month to see this with me?<G> Only when I win the lottery, but I can dream, can't I....<G>00020000084000013355 83A,I will report any reviews I hear or see, and I hope others do the same. If anyone is lucky enough to be heading to England in May or June, the ENB does have a Web Page listing performances and it can be jumped to from Pam's T&D Web page.Margo Von T.Subj: Re:Chris Dean's ENB BalletDate: 4/29/96 7:45:20 PMFrom: Triplecatz Posted on: America OnlineHey Margo!I'll gladly go, if I win the lottery I'll buy you ticket if you win buy mine!<g>PamSubj: Re:Chris Dean's ENB BalletDate: 5/2/96 1:21:12 PMFrom: MamariaP Posted on: America OnlineBook me a ticket too. <g> Margo, what's that quote Chris made? I am expecting more photos through the month, and possibly some updated event info by the end of the month. (I've been promised) At someone's request, I've tried to put a Last Updated date at the bottom of each page, so you can see what's new. (Haven't done one on the contact page, because it hasn't been updated in quite a while.) If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know, and if you ever go online and the page is missing, please let me know ASAP (sometimes AOL drops my index file, don't know why<G>!) This is a note off the ballet newsgroup and was posted by Richard Shaw who is the Director of Public Affairs for the ENB:000200000C8B00013B8F C85,"Below is a programme note regarding Christopher Dean's first production for a Ballet Company. The ballet stars Estonian couple Thomas Edur and his wife Agnes Oaks in the cast alongside other members of the company. It has been in rehearsal for 5 weeks and makes it's London debut June 17 at the Royal Festival Hall...."Mr. Shaw continues: "I've just been in to see some of the rehearsal and I think it's going to be great. Jayne Torvill was there too!"Programme Notes for ENCOUNTERSChoreography: Christopher Dean; Assistant to the Choreographer: Andris Toppe; Music: Paul Simon; Design by Fotini Dimou; Lighting by Peter Mumford.Encounters is Christopher Dean's first work for a ballet company. Instantly recognizable as one half of the world's most legendary ice-dance duo, Dean's unrivalled talents have been translated from ice to dance. Dean has always expressed an interest in choreographing for a ballet company but his career commitments both at amateur and professional status have till now precluded this.Dean formed his partnership with Jayne Torvill in 1975 and throughout his illustrious career won a strong of medals at the British Championships, the European and World Championships, the Olympic Games, the World Professional Figure Skating and Ice Dance Championships, and the World Team Figure Skating Championships. He was also awarded an MBE in 1981 and an Honorary Degree by Nottingham Trent University in 1993.With monochrome costume representing characters in the past and colour costumes representing characters in the present, this work represents an exciting new chapter in Dean's career. Set to six songs by internationally renowned musician Paul Simon, and loosely auto-biographical, Encounters is a 25 minute ballet in the contemporary classical vein containing two pas de deux and several pas de trois and pas de quatres, which makes subtle references to personal and professional relationships in Dean's lift."There you have it -- I WANNA GO <whine> -- maybe I can win the lottery by June....<G>Margo Von T.Subj: Re:Dean ENB BalletDate: 5/4/96 8:40:12 PMFrom: DeliNellie Posted on: America OnlineI too wish I could go to see this ballet. My friend is going on the 17th. I told her that I excpected full details. So, I'll let you know second hand what it was like. Hey, Margo...Good Luck on that lottery win!!Gabriella.Subj: T&D sing too?Date: 5/4/96 9:27:42 PMFrom: MamariaP Posted on: America OnlineI was kicking around on the Net and came across a posting about an album T&D recorded in the eighties. What's the skinny on this? Does anyone have any details? Sound hilarious.JoeAnnKSubj: Re:T&D sing too?Date: 5/5/96 1:14:39 AMFrom: DeliNellie Posted on: America OnlineT&D recorded an album in Australia (the only place it was sold) for someone they called "the unluckiest man alive." There are details about it in their autobiography. Apparently the whole thing was quite funny. After all, Chris is tone-deaf. It was not out long, and there weren't many copies available to begin with. I think it would be great to hear though. Hope this helps.Gabriella.8/14/96 4:52:10 PM Closing "T&D.LOG"00040000000D000000020114816000050000000C000000020ü1481600006000000610000000210üüC310éé┴FFFFüü0éC00000┬
